Social media celebrity-activist Thy Sovantha yesterday asked the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to proceed with a defamation complaint against two CNRP activists for contradicting her claim that 900 people had attended one of her NGO’s provincial meetings.

Sovantha is suing Mounh Sarath, head of the CNRP taskforce for Oddar Meanchey, and Oun Vansak, a CNRP member and administrator of the I Love Cambodia Hot News II Facebook page, for saying on Facebook that only 70 people attended the Youth and Social Affairs meeting in Oddar Meanchey’s Trapaing Prasat district in June.

Speaking to reporters, Sovantha said she asked the court to proceed with the suit and was demanding $10,000 from each of the accused. “I came here to confirm the complaint, and I do have more proof,” she said without detailing the evidence.

Sovantha added she wanted to make sure the accused used Facebook carefully and did not accuse her without evidence. However, Sarath said he had the freedom to express his views on Facebook and had no intention of defaming anyone.

He equated his post to the differing estimates for the number of participants at slain political commentator Kem Ley’s funeral procession on Sunday.

He added that Sovantha’s complaint was intended to disturb the work he did for the CNRP.

Sovantha is also suing CNRP acting president Kem Sokha in a separate defamation case.
