The CNRP has opted to send lawmakers to today’s finance and banking commission meeting despite maintaining a boycott of the National Assembly.
Two of the party’s four committee members will join with their five ruling party counterparts to assess the European Union’s 2016 support budget for Cambodia with a technical working group from the EU.
CNRP spokesman Yem Ponhearith said lawmakers Khy Vandeth and Long Bunny would attend to advocate for transparency and accountability.
Eng Chhay Eang, also a CNRP spokesman, said the party had not declared an absolute boycott of the parliament since the attempted arrest of their acting president Kem Sokha but had missed sessions as they were unhappy with the legislature’s decision to ignore the immunity of Sokha, who is staying at party headquarters to avoid arrest.
Noting the CNRP had also attended a July 18 permanent committee session at the parliament to fight moves to strip immunity from two other CNRP lawmakers, Chhay Eang said the party would join “necessary” meetings and continue to push the CPP on governance.
