The wife and four children of slain political analyst Kem Ley left Cambodia on Sunday, according to a member of the committee that is arranging Mr. Ley’s upcoming 100-day funeral ceremony.

But Buntenh, founder of the Independent Monk Network and a member of the committee, told Khmer Times that Bou Rachana and her four children left the country as they felt worried for their safety.

“Ms. Rachana and her four sons are staying safe and sound,” he said in a message via Facebook. He declined to say which country the family had gone to.

A week after the murder in July, Australian news outlet ABC reported that five months’ pregnant Ms. Rachana wished to seek asylum in Australia for herself and her four children, as she no longer felt safe in Cambodia.

Before she left, Venerable Buntenh said the task of arranging Mr. Ley’s 100-day funeral ceremony, which will take place from October 16 to 18, had been passed to the remaining committee members. Ven. Buntenh said it had not yet been decided if the ceremony would take place in Phnom Penh, or in Takeo city, Mr. Ley’s hometown.

Mr. Ley’s brother, Kem Rithysith said that he only learned of the family’s departure from local media yesterday morning, and had no idea where they had gone. He said it was highly unlikely they would return for the funeral ceremony.

Immigration officials at the Phnom Penh International Airport told Khmer Times that neither Ms. Rachana nor her four children departed from the airport on Sunday.
