Prime Minister Hun Sen has requested the assistance of Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Stéphane Dion in mitigating the impact of climate change during an official meeting last Friday, noting, among other things, the recent severe drought.

“Canada is happy to cooperate with Cambodia over climate,” Hun Sen said in a Facebook post.

In November 2015, the Canadian government announced its plan to contribute $2.65 billion to its Green Climate Fund over the next five years. The fund is spent on projects that help developing nations adapt to the impacts of climate change.

In the post, the premier also suggested that developed countries should take greater responsibility since they have “consumed many resources for their development”.

Canadian officials could not be reached yesterday.
