ACU grills officials over national exam issues

The Anti-Corruption Unit yesterday was tight-lipped about what further action, if any, it will take against the teachers and Ministry of Education officials who were questioned over “irregularities” during last month’s high-stakes Grade 12 national exams.

Om Yentieng, president of the ACU, said all those who were ordered to appear at the ACU yesterday showed up, and would only add that officials would further “analyse” the case. “The law does not allow me to talk about the issues we are working on,” he said.

High school teachers Yi Sreynget and Chaing Chanhout; Education Ministry deputy director-general Chivu Ratha; and Poy Vy, deputy chief at the ministry’s regulations department, were questioned yesterday. Tuol Ampil High School teacher Hourn Mony Leasmy was also questioned late last month over allegedly taking money from students.

Ministry of Education spokesman Ros Salin yesterday said the ministry hadn’t received any updates on the cases.

Meanwhile, officials expect to announce the results on September 13 for Phnom Penh and Kandal, and on September 14 for the rest of the provinces.
