The Ministry of National Defense announced on Friday that it is seeking more than 400 candidates to join the military in 2017.
The announcement stated that the ministry was seeking both male and female candidates to work in the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF).
Candidates must have Cambodian nationality, be aged 18 to 25 years, be physically able to work, have more than a secondary school degree, obtain behavior confirmation from commune offices and have no criminal record. Male candidates must be taller than 1.6 meters while the minimum height for females is 1.5 meters.
The announcement added that exam applications would be accepted from today until November 22 at the National Defense University and at military garrisons 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
A Defense Ministry official who declined to be named said yesterday the recruitment of 420 new soldiers was divided into three divisions, including the selection of about 200 candidates for the Royal Cambodian Army.
“Every year, not only this year, the ministry always recruits new soldiers to replace the old soldiers who have reached retirement age,” he said.
RCAF infantry spokesman Mao Phalla said that training would take from 18 months to three years, and for those who pass with good grades, the ministry may send them to work for another department in accordance with the candidates’ ability.
“When they finish studying, sometimes they are sent to study another subject. Some will be taken by the Royal Cambodian Army directly. It’s not normal, but sometimes they are healthy, so they will be sent to the air force. But first, they will be trained for 18 months or three years,” he said.
In late June, before the grade 12 national exam, military officials in charge of recruitment began a campaign seeking new soldiers at various high schools in Phnom Penh to show the benefits of military and military training.
The RCAF currently has about 85,000 ground troops under its command.
