An unidentified man in his twenties was shot dead yesterday morning in Siem Reap town’s Ampil commune, according to local authorities.

Tith Narong, Siem Reap town police chief, said the victim was shot in the throat and left to die in the road on the outskirts of the city. The suspect fled the scene and remains at large.

Police have not yet identified the victim, Narong said.

Authorities did find a bus ticket from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap inside the victim’s pocket, leading Narong to suspect he hailed from the capital.

Police tried to contact the bus company, but did not receive any information. “We have also contacted Phnom Penh authorities for help in identifying the victim,” Narong said.

The victim’s body was found in a quiet area on the outskirts of town. Local people told police they didn’t know anything and didn’t hear the gunshot.

“The victim may have been brought here by the suspect. It is a quiet place and there’s no homes nearby. Our first theory is that it’s revenge,” Narong said.

However, he said, police are investigating.
