The Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC) yesterday asked the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Cambodia for help in writing reports and educating law enforcement officials.

The discussion was made yesterday at the CHRC office between CHRC president Keo Remy and Wan-Hea Lee, the representative of the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Cambodia.

“Both sides discussed technical assistance and cooperation such as writing human rights reports, exchanging information about complaints, announcing laws and educating law enforcement officials on human rights laws,” Mr. Remy said.

He pointed out that both sides agreed to create a working group to exchange information and receive complaints to check whether they are related to human rights.

“Our committee also asked for help from her to educate our officials on writing human rights reports,” he said, adding that she also agreed to this request. They also agreed to help educate law enforcement officials on human rights laws and assist in announcing laws to citizens.

“We have begun dialogue and I think we will take a lot of time to continue,” Ms. Lee told reporters after the meeting, adding that both sides started on good terms.

Mr. Remy said both sides also discussed the current situation in Cambodia. The CHRC will meet with UN Special Rapporteur Rhona Smith next week.
