Two separate shooting incidents involving military officials occurred on Monday, leaving one man dead and another injured.

In Kampong Cham, a division military commander, Luk Chhun, was arrested yesterday after fatally shooting his deputy commander, Chan Pov, in the neck a day earlier with a K-59 pistol.

“[The two] had a scuffle and the suspect’s K-59 was triggered, shooting the victim in the neck and causing him to die at the scene,” said Regiment 1 Commander Chan Sarath, who had been 50 metres from the incident.

“It was night-time and dark, so it was difficult for him to shoot the victim in the dark like that,” he said, adding that Chhun, who did not flee as he claimed he had no intention to kill, had been arrested by provincial military police.

In a separate case on Monday, in Battambang’s Svay Por commune, military police officer Teng Thean, 34, shot 24-year-old Proeun Ratha in the leg during an argument.

“He was drunk and angry so he shot the victim in the leg. The victim has been taken to the hospital,” commune police chief Lay Phan Ny said, adding it was not yet known what had sparked the conflict.
