Signs of stress Woman says CPP signage blocks home

Meas Sokchea, The Phnom Penh Post
Wed, 9 November 2016

A woman in Svay Rieng province says she has had little luck getting local authorities to move a CPP billboard, installed by a local party member, from the entrance of her home.

The case gained widespread attention after a video was posted on Facebook on Monday, in which local CPP organiser Chhim Chandara is seen angrily preventing two men from removing the signage, at one point throwing a shovel.

Mon Tip, the aggrieved Svay Rieng commune resident, said the billboard was installed in front of the gate to her house last year and multiple attempts to get local officials to move it failed. “We can walk into the house, but cars and motorbikes cannot enter because they planted the posts and put a sign next to my fence,” she said.

Reached yesterday, Chandara refuted Tip’s claims, saying the billboard was posted before the fence and gate were installed and that she had the relevant permission to install the signage on public land.

Deputy commune chief Hun Sophanith would only acknowledge the sign blocked Tip’s entrance and that the case had been taken up by town authorities. Multiple local officials could not be reached.
