The family of two rowers killed in a boat accident on Friday will today meet with representatives of the cruise ship company involved to negotiate a compensation package, with no court complaint or arrests having been made as of yesterday.

The two rowers – identified as Chhoen Chorn, 36, and Sok Chan Chesda, 18 – were part of a nine-member team practising for the Water Festival races on Friday when their boat was struck by the 223-foot Cruiseco Adventurer, a river cruise ship that runs between Vietnam and Cambodia. Their bodies were recovered and returned to their families on Sunday.

Ly Vantheng, Prek Thmei commune chief and the team’s leader, said the families had not filed a complaint and were looking to first negotiate with Cruiseco. “We will wait and see the result tomorrow on whether there will be a deal or not,” he said.

Sim Phors, Chan Chesda’s father, said the family was still in shock but that authorities were helping them negotiate.

“The commune chief, district officials and City Hall have organised to help us get compensation,” he said. “We are very sad and regret losing him.”
