Teen found strangled to death in trash heap

A garbage collector uncovered a gruesome scene yesterday when he found the body of a strangled woman in a trash pile in Phnom Penh’s Sen Sok district.

Mork Hong, Sen Sok district police chief, said the woman – who had serious injuries to her face – had been murdered. “When a person dies with violent marks like this, it is a murder case,” he said.

Chum Saray, Phnom Penh Thmey commune chief, said that the victim was Keo Kanha, a 19-year-old karaoke club worker from Meanchey district.

Saray said that the victim was found by a trash collector on Street 1003 in Phnom Penh at 10:40am yesterday morning. The man then reported it to police.

Saray said her face had been severely beaten, a nylon string was wrapped around her neck and the body was covered with a blanket. Initially, authorities thought the body was too disfigured to identify, but the victim’s family ultimately came forward to identify her. She was cremated later that day.

A Phnom Penh Thmey police officer, speaking anonymously, said the girl’s mother stated that her daughter had disappeared from home the day before she was killed.
