One of Prime Minister Hun Sen’s bodyguards was arrested early yesterday morning and charged with drunk driving after ramming a motorbike in Preah Sihanouk’s Lex 4 commune, chief of the Provincial Traffic Police Unit Major Prum Pov said.

A second lieutenant in the army, 37-year-old Ouk Samith was arrested at 2:30am near the site of the crash in village 4. He had been driving his Toyota Highlander, which Mr. Pov added was carrying a fake military license plate.

Mr. Samith allegedly drove into a Honda Scoopy, lightly damaging it. While the motorcycle’s driver walked away from the crash unharmed, Mr. Pov said that rather than take responsibility for causing the crash, Mr. Samith instead attempted to drive away from police, “bragging that he was a bodyguard of the prime minister.”

“When our traffic police stopped him, he said that he did not listen to their explanation that he should respect the traffic law,” Mr. Pov said.

“So we decided to send him to court,” he added, saying the premier’s bodyguard’s car was impounded at the time, not only because of its illegal license plates, but because Mr. Samith did not have a driver’s license.

Mr. Samith was charged with “driving while drunk, driving without a license and activities causing misapprehension with discharge of public function” under articles 75 and 82 of the Law on Road Traffic and article 610 of the Penal Code. He is now detained in the provincial prison.
