Municipal police are considering implementing high-tech security cameras from China to help solve traffic accidents and crack down on crimes in the capital.

Lieutenant General Sar Thet, chief of Phnom Penh police, said on Facebook that he led a delegation in China yesterday to observe locations where the security cameras are in use.

He also visited an unnamed company that develops security cameras. Lt Gen Thet said the company’s lenses can zoom in from 10 kilometres away in high resolution.

“This latest technology has many benefits for police. For example, when there is a traffic accident, the camera can help us know the colour of a shirt, the colour of a car, and number plates and hair colour,” he said. “When there are many cameras installed, we can also reduce the number of forces working on the street.”

Chhay Mouykeang, a 38-year-old food vendor, yesterday said security cameras strategically placed in public areas will contribute to security.

“It’s really important for cameras to monitor the streets because they can help identify perpetrators,” Ms Mouykeang said.

Ouk Sopheap, 45, said Phnom Penh still faces challenges.

“I have observed that the current challenges in Phnom Penh are traffic accidents, littering, drugs and theft,” Mr Sopheap said. “If the chief of Phnom Penh police can find a solution, our city will be safer and more secure.”

. .
Yong Kim Eng, president of the People Centre for Development and Peace, yesterday said many security cameras have been installed throughout the streets of Phnom Penh. However, the cameras are not effectively utilised.

“We have seen theft and traffic violation cases, but no one has taken data from the cameras,” Mr Kim Eng said. “If more advanced security cameras are going to be installed, then use them more actively than before because I think that security cameras can help with security.”
